#BlackLivesMatter: How mainstream bridal media houses are responding

As the world responds to the death of George Floyd and racial discrimination as a whole with protests, social media posts and more, the mainstream bridal media houses have decided to speak up too. A number of bridal media houses like Brides, Wedding Chicks, Junebug Weddings, and more shared various lists of black-owned businesses to support. Here are all the lists we’ve seen.

Brides published a list of 100+ Black-Owned Wedding Businesses to Support Now and Always as a start towards ‘making Brides a more diverse brand.‘ The list features African wedding vendors such as Nigerian photography company – Bedge Pictures, South African planner Precious the Planner and more

Junebug Weddings shared a note on the 2nd of June 2020 titled ‘Black Love Matters – A Note from the Junebug Team.’ The note stated; “In light of the anti-racist conversations happening on social media and beyond, we are here to tell you that we take responsibility for our shortcomings, that we acknowledge the ways we have perpetuated racism in the wedding industry, and that we are committed to change. We unequivocally support the celebration and the safety of Black lives and Black love.” They followed this up with a list titled ‘200+ Amazing Black Wedding Vendors to Follow on Instagram‘.

Wedding Chicks shared a list of Black Wedding dress designers who need to be on your radar, which features some of our favorite designers, Brides by NoNA and Ese Azenabor.

  1. It’s funny and sad at the same time that Black Lives Matter protests had to happen, for these platforms to post black weddings and support black-owned businesses.

What about traditional African weddings, Lebanese weddings, Indian weddings etc Not their kind of content? Because these media houses claim to be committed to the ‘wedding world’. I think they should be more specific about their content.

Let’s just give them time. I can’t wait to see what these platforms do in the future.
