Valentine’s Day Survival Guide 101: From a Lagos Babe

So, Valentine’s is coming o, and I swear Lagos streets are already smelling like chocolate and overpriced roses. Everywhere I look, couples are flexing #LoveGoals on Instagram, restaurants are acting like they invented romance, and me? I’m just here wondering why a single day is making grown people stress over a box of chocolate.

Every year, it feels like surviving Valentine’s Day has become a full-time job, especially if you’re not interested in performing love for the internet.

But I’ve decided that nobody will pressure me this year. Come, let me give you Valentine’s Survival Guide 101 from a Lagos babe.

Tip 1: Buy your own chocolate

Abegi, why wait for someone to give you the chocolate you actually want? Walk into that store, pick your fave, and don’t feel guilty.

This is the one day of the year you can treat yourself like royalty. Your only responsibility today is happiness, and maybe finishing that box in one sitting. Seriously, sometimes surviving Valentine’s Day starts with doing exactly what makes you smile, no explanations needed.

Tip 2: Avoid toxic DMs

Your phone is buzzing? Not every message deserves your attention. Ghosters, confusers, and “I love you in February only” types can rest. Block them because you deserve peace, memes, and movies, not drama. Your mental space is more important than anyone’s Valentine performance.

Tip 3: Treat yourself like the main character

Whether you’re single, taken, or deep inside “it’s complicated,” remember that Valentine’s is your vibe. Pamper yourself, watch that show that makes you laugh, order that meal that makes your taste buds dance. Be the main character you were born to be.

Tip 4: Pace the romance

2026 brides, this one is for you. Your brain is already full of weddings, vendors and fittings. Valentine’s does not need extra pressure Biko. A small, thoughtful moment is enough because you need to save the grand gestures for the aisle. Part of surviving Valentine’s Day is knowing when to slow things down and protect your joy.

Tip 5: Keep it gentle

Love doesn’t need to shout. A kind message, a shared meal, or sitting with someone who makes you smile is enough. Don’t let social media convince you that love must be loud to be real.

Valentine’s 2026 mood? Be happy.

Single, taken, or somewhere in between, make the day yours.

See you next Saturday.

Xoxo, Dara
