Dara’s Corner: To Tag Or Not To Tag

I know you guys think anytime I come here to give you people gist, it’s for wedding wahala but this time I don dey vex on somebody else behalf, so make I use this rant well well.

I have come to gist you people small this morning, and it is not even my own matter this time, it actually turned into a whole discussion with my girls after one of them, a bride, told us what happened between her and her wedding photographer, whether you should tag your photographer on social media or allow them add their logo on your pictures if you already paid them.

One of my girls said it’s not a big deal, that maybe the bride is “deeping” it and just does not like the logo, that is why she doesn’t want it on her pictures, but the 2 other girls supported her and her decision because well….it’s her money and she should decide how she wants her photos to be but see ehn no need for too much talk.. let me give you the gist

So her wedding was last month and she had her wedding photoshoot, they agreed on everything the day before the shoot and she even made full payment. The shoot turned out beautifully, the guy showed up and did his thing. She absolutely loved the pictures, she said they were sooo nice she can’t even lie. Then the files landed in her inbox, and he had stamped his logo right there in the corner on every single one.

She didn’t like it so she just sent a normal message. “Hi, please can I get the version without the logo, since these are the ones you delivered as part of my package.”

He came back with, and she told us she is quoting this exactly because she did not want anybody to think she is exaggerating, “You have to pay if you want the pictures without my logo.”

She said she sat with her phone in her hand for a minute, not even typing, just staring. Her chest actually got tight, the kind of tight that you know is pure anger. Because at that point it was not even about the money, it was about the audacity.

She tried to explain herself to him. She told him, if a brand wants to repost the image on their own page, fine, put your logo there, nobody is arguing with that, that is literally what logos are for but these are her wedding pictures and her money. If she wants to frame one in her house, does he now expect her to frame his business name inside her own living room?

He kept talking and talking, round and round. The back and forth was becoming exhausting and that’s when she knew, this guy was not about to see sense, so she told him plainly, she is never working with this particular photographer again.

The annoying part is she asked people she knows who have done proper shoots and they said the standard thing is you get your raw, clean images, and then separately, maybe the photographer selects a small batch to add the logo to for social media purposes and even that one is optional, you choose whether to post it or not. Meanwhile there she was, she ended up holding wedding pictures she paid for and could not even use the way she wanted to.

That whole wahala got us thinking about something else though. This tagging matter, we feel like it’s the same argument really. You bought this from your photographer, you don’t owe it to them to tag them just because you got it from them. As long as you paid them for the service, you don’t need to tag them, that’s them trying to get double value from you. Some vendors make it compulsory sef and we feel like that’s entitlement.

Is it just us or did the photographer act entitled and try to shove his logo down her throat or like my friend said maybe she didn’t like logo and took it too seriously

Anyway, that is my own for today. If any of you has an opinion on this tagging matter, compulsory or courtesy, or had to deal with a photographer who forced their logo onto the pictures abeg come and hold my hand in the comments, because I want to know if she handled the situation right?

See you next Saturday. Xoxo, ‘Dara
