It seems like 2026 is raining weddings and proposals for Nigerian and African celebrities, and we just love it because love is worth celebrating. Last week, Nollywood legend Omotola Jalade Ekeinde’s daughter, Meraiah, said yes to her boo. We haven’t recovered from the excitement, and now yesterday we heard of another magical proposal.
Michelle Adepoju, the woman behind KÍLÉNTÁR, the African luxury fashion brand everyone from Tracee Ellis Ross to Naomi Osaka has worn, just got engaged. And the proposal was, in her words, “Magic.”
If her name sounds familiar, it should. Forbes named her to its 30 Under 30 Europe list for Arts and Culture, and she has spent the last few years putting African craftsmanship on runways it has never touched before, including her New York Fashion Week debut in 2024.
She shared it on her Instagram yesterday, @michelleta_, with a story that simply said “Thousands of candles, just us, and a night I’m still not over…” In the video she shared, she was standing amid rows and rows of candles stretching across dark sand, all leading toward a bonfire in the distance. A live mariachi band played in full black and silver regalia, while fireworks went off over the ocean like the sky itself was celebrating with her. She captioned the full video “A night that felt like a dream, I was living wide awake.”
If you know Michelle’s brand, none of this should surprise you, because she built KÍLÉNTÁR on detail and intention, so of course her own proposal came with the same level of care and intentionality.
Now let us talk about who pulled this off, because the planning alone deserves its own applause. Califano Productions, the London based destination event studio run by Jamie Mangan, made it happen. If that name sounds familiar, it is because they are the same team behind Temi Otedola and Mr Eazi’s wedding that spanned several countries. So when it comes to pulling off something this big and this beautiful, it’s their forte. Michelle tagged them in her story saying “Thank you for curating such magic!!”
The proposal happened at Cuixmala, that legendary private estate on Mexico’s Pacific coast, right by the famous striped dome villa. In Califano’s recap of the night on IG, the team described it as an evening of quiet anticipation and extraordinary moments, one reveal leading into the next with candles by the thousand. Music echoing against the ocean. Fireworks lighting up the coastline. Mariachi and dancers waiting just around the corner. Cuixmala is not somewhere you just show up to either, it is one of the most private, most exclusive estates in the world, so the team clearly curated every detail to be unforgettable.
